Microsoft Outlook Tips

Microsoft Outlook Tips by Susan Brennan

Microsoft Outlook is a personal information manager that can help you increase efficiency and organize your busy life. Whether you use it to help prioritize your time at work, or to manage personal tasks, knowing how too effectively use Microsoft Outlook will make collaboration a breeze and save time. Here are some useful Outlook tips that will assist you in maximizing productivity:

• Did you know you could set a reminder to reply to a message? Simply right-click the message you want to set the reminder for, point to Follow Up, and then click Add Reminder. In the Due By list, click the date when you have to complete the reply. In the second list, click a time. In the Flag color list, click the flag color you want, and then click OK

• Would you like to send a message to multiple people without revealing other recipients' identities? In order to do this, you will need to use the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) line in the message. If you add an email address in the Bcc line, a copy of the message is sent to that person, but his or her name is not visible to other recipients. Using this method increases email address privacy, and reduces the risk of the recipients’ address being harvested by senders of bulk email (spammers)

• You can automatically add a signature or logo to each message you send -- On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab. If you have more than one account, select the account you want to create the signature for, and then click Signatures

• Have you ever hit the Send button too soon? You can recall that message -- To recall or replace a sent message, simply open the message in the Sent Items folder, and on the Actions menu, click Recall This Message. You’ll have to be on an exchange server network for this to work, however

• You can add holidays to your Outlook Calendar On the Tools menu, click Options, click Calendar Options, and then click Add Holidays. Outlook will then install the holidays for the current year

• You can access any Outlook folder from your Windows desktop -- Create a shortcut to an Outlook folder on the Windows desktop by dragging the folder from Outlook to your Windows desktop. Be sure to press CTRL before you release the mouse button. When you double-click the new shortcut, Outlook will open to that folder

• If you want to quickly attach a file to a message, task, appointment, meeting request, journal entry, or contact -- Open the item, then on the Insert menu, click File. Locate the file you want to attach. You can also click and drag a file into the body of the email message

• To add a new contact from an e-mail message " Open the message. In the From field, right-click the name you want to make into a contact. On the shortcut menu, click Add to Outlook Contacts.

• Like using the keyboard instead of the mouse? Try these shortcuts:

• To reply to your current e-mail message, press CTRL+R. • To forward your current e-mail message, press CTRL+F. • To delete your current e-mail message, press CTRL+D. • To quickly remove formatting from selected text, press CTRL+SPACEBAR. • To reply to everyone who received the selected message, press CTRL+SHIFT+R.

Microsoft Word Tips

Microsoft Word Tips by Susan Brennan

If you have ever used a computer, chances are you have also used Microsoft Word to create documents for work, school or life. Word makes it easy for anyone to quickly create, edit and share professional looking documents. Here are a few tips to help you get exactly what you need or want using Microsoft Word.

Working on Two Separate Document Sections

Have you ever needed to edit a large document, and needed to work simultaneously with sections on different pages? You can do this by splitting the document window:

• From the Window menu, choose Split
• A horizontal line will appear in the middle of the screen.

With your mouse, click and drag the line up or down, then click away from the line to set the split. You can switch between the two panes by clicking on the document text in the top or bottom pane. MS Word will remember both cursor positions as you work between the two sections. You can remove the split by going back to the Window menu, and selecting Remove Split

Preventing Page Breaks in Paragraphs

Your document may include a paragraph split onto separate pages. This may not be ideal for you. By default, Word splits large paragraphs onto separate pages. To change this, do the following

• Select a paragraph or group of paragraphs, and right-click
• Select Paragraph from the menu
• When the dialog box appears, select Line and Page Breaks
• Check Keep lines together
• Press OK to close the dialog box

Disable Reading Layout

When you open MS Word documents from e-mail attachments or from other sources, Word displays them in the "Reading Layout". While intended to make the documents easier to read and scan, it can reformat tables of contents, lists, tables, and long paragraphs.

If you would rather not use this feature, and open documents in the default (Print Layout) view instead, try this:

• Click the Tools menu and select Options
• When the dialog box appears, click General
• Uncheck "Allow starting in Reading Layout"
• Click OK to close the dialog box

An Easier Way to Create Tables

If you are like most Word users, when you need to insert a table, you create the table first, then tab through and insert the data. There’s a much more efficient way to create tables. First, enter your table data in your document, separated by commas (comma-delimited format). For example, let’s say you want a table that shows the number of new employees hired in three departments during the first quarter. Your data would look like this:

Jan,Feb,March
Sales,2,11,9
Marketing,3,9,14
Accounting,2,9,4

Now, highlight the text and choose "Table then Insert Table" A 4x4 table is automatically created for you. If you want to change the formatting, go to Table, then Table Autoformat to apply a table template; or you can go through the Table menu and manually edit the table's display properties.

Full-Screen Mode

When you edit a document in Microsoft Word, your workspace is shared with toolbars, a menu bar, a status bar, and your system toolbar/taskbar. If you’d like to hide everything but your document, click View and select Full Screen. To return to normal view, press the ESC key, or select Close Full Screen from the Full Screen toolbar that appears. You can also move your mouse pointer to the top of the screen to access the menu items.

What is Windows Firewall?

What is Windows Firewall? by Samson John

Windows Firewall is a personal firewall which comes bundled with Microsoft's Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista operating systems. It filters data before it enters your system. Not only does Windows Firewall check incoming information; it takes care of outgoing information as well. A firewall that works with a router program probes every network packet to decide whether to forward it toward its address.

Windows Firewall protects the valuable data stored on your PC in following ways:

* Denying Remote Login. * Preventing SMTP session hijacking. * Scanning E-mail bombs that carry viruses and other malware. * Not allowing suspicious Macros to run on PC. * Keeping track of Virus, Spams and Trojans. * Deleting / blocking risk ware.

Windows Firewall ensures an effective security of Microsoft Windows. It also prevents the malicious software from going out of the system followed by giving prompt to clean it. Computer viruses and hackers use open ports of a computer whose firewall security system is disabled. It leads to spread of virus in whole PC. Therefore, a firewall is essential security software on a computer.

Windows Firewall was first released onto Windows XP SP2. All kind of network connection including wired, wireless, VPN, or even FireWire, has the firewall enabled by default. However, there can be some built in exceptions allowing connections from machine on the local network.

Windows Vista has an improved version of the firewall which boasts of addressing concerns around the flexibility of Windows Firewall in a corporate environment.

Installing firewall security system offers an ultimate protection to network against outside intruders. Improper architecture or poor set up of firewall can affect data, thereby hampering your productivity. This encourages a need for to avail firewall support specifically focused on firewall protection.

Is Spyware Nuker Safe? Don't Buy Spyware Nuker Before Reading Our Review

Is Spyware Nuker Safe? Don't Buy Spyware Nuker Before Reading Our Review by John Wood

Malware (spyware & adware), cyberspace's worst nightmare, are so prevalent that 9 of out 10 PCs hooked to the internet are infected by one or more malware programs lurking on the net today.

Among these applications that are maliciously deployed by hackers are several hundreds or thousands of spyware programs that intrude into your system to allow people to monitor what you do online. These do not only destroy your PC and invade your privacy; these also steal your identity.

Destroy your PC or your entire network Just imagine the amount of trouble, the amount of time and the amount of money lost when your PC crashes and you lose valuable data. Large corporations who have fallen victims to these malware are reported to have lost millions.

Invade your privacy Many spouses have divorced and employees were fired because of this. Suspicious wives/husbands and/or employers secretly download these spyware programs to PCs to monitor everything spouses or employees do online. These programs can monitor and register:

· every website you visit

· every e-mails you send or receive

· every instant messages you send or receive

· every chat room conversations you made

· every program that you run

· and every KEYSTROKE that you type (!)

This is total invasion of anyone's privacy!

Identity Theft This type of crime has been unheard of until recently. Hackers deploy Trojans through several means mentioned above to infiltrate your system and steal vital information about you. Whether as an individual or as a corporation, your financial information, bank transactions, account numbers, passwords, etc. are accessed by these hackers to literally take your life away.

Consider these figures:

27.3 million Americans became unwitting victims of identity theft over the past 5 years;

9.9 million Americans is last years reported casualties of identity theft;

There are more than 78,000 malware (spyware & adware) applications that threaten to wreak havoc to networks or PCs today.

There is a 90% chance that your PC has been infected when you downloaded music, movies, screensavers, photos, games, etc.,

Protect yourself, fortify your PC or network with anti-spyware programs Anti-spyware applications abound in the market today. From among these varied choices, Spyware Nuker caught our attention. Its user-interface is simple and clean and, while it is split into 5 different tabs, it remains user- friendly owing to its features that are not much different from other anti-spyware applications.

There's the usual interface that lets you select the drive/s you wish to scan, the quick scan or thorough scan options, and the usual after-scan report that it generates. Spyware Nuker, however, have some interesting improvements made in this feature that we find to our liking: the report is generated in a separate browser which makes it easier to work with.

Another interesting feature of Spyware Nuker is the ALERTS tab that tells you whenever the registry values are changed or if your browser has been hijacked. Nothing beats a prompt threat alert.

Spyware Nuker also packs the usual spyware features like the exclude tab to let you manually select what needs to be deleted after a scan, the quarantine option, the restore option, the active protection that works real-time, and of course, the scheduled scan option.

Another useful feature Spyware Nuker has is the "Spyshield Team" concept where users are actively involved in identifying the latest spyware and adware infections. This is exactly what another brand of anti-spyware application is doing and this concept greatly helps in keeping pace with the rapidly evolving and multiplying malware that are being released almost on a daily basis.

All in all, Spyware Nuker could be very good protection for your PC.

Does SpywareBot Work? Don't Buy SpywareBot Before Reading Our Review

Does SpywareBot Work? Don't Buy SpywareBot Before Reading Our Review by John Wood

Almost all of us are aware of the term Spyware and even those who do not know its definition at least know that it does not bode well for their computers. Spyware, as the name suggests, are programs that are made to spy on you.

These are programs that are specially written to invade your privacy and keep a track of what sites you are visiting, invite unsolicited mails and web sites into your computer and hijack your browser. Spyware programs are getting to be a major threat nowadays with a number of spy ware creators using their programs for identity theft. These people can gain access to personal information about you like your email id, phone number and address etcetera and sell it off to other parties without your permission or knowledge. Even worse, spyware can be used to get passwords and ids to your banking accounts and steal your money. Therefore, it is extremely important that you regularly keep scanning your computer using a good spyware scanning and removal program.

We reviewed SpywareBot, which is one of the most popular spyware removal programs available nowadays and tested it for efficiency as well as value for money. The SpywareBot is an easy to install and user friendly program which can even be used by technophobes to guard and protect their systems against spyware infestation. The main interface page of the program provides information about the total number of scans, the number of threats detected and removed and the last scan carried out. The scan button on the screen lets you scan your computer for spyware threats. SpywareBot will scan all the files and folders in your system for spyware and provide you with the list of anomalies found. System files and registry, which are the main targets of all viruses and other malicious scripts, are also scanned thoroughly. You can chose to delete any errors and spyware manually or let the program do it automatically. The scan performed by SpywareBot is pretty comprehensive but is extremely fast and finishes within a couple of minutes.

SpywareBot also offers you the option of selecting which portions of your system to scan and which to leave, which can be further used to save the time spent in scanning. The scan shows a complete list of malicious scripts and spyware present on your system. If you are a novice at this kind of thing, then it is advised that you let the program delete the spyware itself. Otherwise you can select which files to delete and which to keep manually. SpywareBot does not give the user any information about keyloggers, Trojans and other malicious scripts and therefore, manual deletions are advised only for people who know exactly what they are deleting and what they are keeping. Another feature that comes in handy is the SpywareBots quarantine feature, which lets you quarantine suspected applications instead of deleting them. So just in case you end up deleting an important system file, you can always restore it from the quarantine section.

SpywareBot also allows users to select an option whereby the program will start every time one starts Windows and keep a check on all program activity. Furthermore, the software also lets you choose whether you want the registry, active processes and cookies scanned or not. Apart from this, SpywareBot also has an ignore option which lets you put certain items in the program's ignore list, such that these items will not be scanned or accidentally deleted. Unlike most other anti virus and spyware programs, SpywareBot does not get updated automatically, but you can always update it when online by selecting the update option.

All said and done, the SpywareBot is a comprehensive spyware program which has all the basics covered but still lacks some advanced features that other programs offer like NoAdware for almost the same price. However, if you want to keep things simple and easy, then it is a good option to go for.

Repairing Win32 Errors Made Easy

Repairing Win32 Errors Made Easy by Jeff Wilson

Win32 errors can be irritating. They can also be potentially fatal for your computer. Win32 errors indicate that your Microsoft operating system (OS) is not running as it should, and repairing Win32 errors is vital not just for the well being of your PC, but also for your peace of mind. Janine Reeves, a 31-year-old dance instructor from New York, got so exasperated with constant Win32 errors on her PC that she stopped using it for a time. "I never realised, and no one ever told me, that these errors were linked to my habit of constantly installing and uninstalling applications," she says.

What's the link, you may well ask. Well, without going into any technical questions, suffice it to say that improper installing or uninstalling of applications causes Win32 errors. This is because Win32 is the 32-bit API for all modern Windows versions. API stands for Application Programming Interface, which is what makes your OS run smoothly. WinAPI (short for Windows API) is made up of system DLLs that implement all its functions, and what happens with applications that are improperly installed or uninstalled is that the DLL files are corrupt or damaged, which affects the functioning of the API, and generates Win32 errors.

Assuming all that is clear so far, how does one go about repairing Win32 errors? Well, you can take the long route and reinstall the applications, or you can take the short and painless route and clean Windows Registry. I can see your hands shooting up in the air so let me answer all your unspoken questions. All the data pertaining to the OS on your computer is stored in the Registry. And that includes all corrupt or damaged DLL files as well, which cause Win32 errors. Therefore, the best way to eliminate Win32 errors is to rid Windows Registry of aforementioned files.

While (very) advanced users can manually clean Windows Registry using Regedit.exe, I would absolutely not recommend it to the average user. The consequences of mishandling the Registry can be swift and fatal. So take my advice and download a Registry cleaning tool that will clean your Registry safely, quickly, and painlessly. While there are many reputable Registry cleaners on the market, RegCure is my top pick (visit the link below for a free download). And once your Registry is free from those corrupt or damaged DLL files, you will notice that your task of repairing Win32 errors is over before it has even begun.

Computer - The Need Of Modern Life

Computer - The Need Of Modern Life by Roberto Sedycias

Computers simply mean a machine which can compute. Let us peek into the past and find out who were the geeks who thought about having a device that could perform calculative tasks by recognizing inputs and giving the appropriate outputs.

Abacus developed in 3000 BC can be called the first ever computer as it was a simple counting device. In 1941 a German engineer Konard Zuse developed a first programmable calculator using binary math and Boolean logic. UNIVAC was developed in 1951 and the real breakthrough came in 1952 when Texas Instrument developed the Integrated Circuit. In 1964, IBM introduced a mainframe computer called IBM 360. Apple introduced Apple I in 1976 and Apple II in 1977. The Computer that is familiar to most of us in terms of looks and functionality was unveiled in 1981 when IBM introduced the Personal Computer.

The main characteristics of a Computer are:

1 - It follows and is capable of following a special set of instructions.

2 - It can execute preset list of instructions generally known as a computer program.

The basic components which are essential to make a computer are:

1 - Input Device comprising of a Keyboard and Mouse which are used for entering instructions and data into the computer.

2 - Output device such as the Visual Display Unit or the Screen, Printer etc, which lets us see what the computer has done.

3 - The Central Processing Unit which is known as the brain of the Computer where all the processing of data is done and instructions are executed.

4 - Memory is the powerhouse of the computer which stores data and instructions in it.

5 - Mass Storage Devices are those which permanently stores and retain large amount of data. The common ones are floppy drives, CD-ROMs, Hard disks etc.

Computers come in various types designed for various purposes keeping in mind different categories of its users. According to their type they have different capabilities and are priced accordingly. The most popular computer is the Personal Computer which is for personal use of a single user at one time. They come in two types; A Desktop and a Laptop. Then there is an even smaller computer known as the Palmtop which can be held in the palms of the user. While these are the smaller and personal types of computers, The Mainframe, Workstation and Supercomputers are the larger high end computers used by big organizations.

Computers can perform a wide range of functions such as word processing, Digital Audio/Video composition, Internet, Communications and Networking and Desktop Publishing. Computers word processing capability includes automatic correction of spelling and grammar mistakes. Internet is one of the greatest inventions of human beings. It connects infinite number of computers in the manner of a web.

Ungodly amounts of information are available on the Internet and facilities of communications such as messaging, audio and video conferencing are available for free. Graphic engineers are using computers for editing audio and video compositions. No media production can be completed without the help of computers. Nowadays Computers are indispensable for Banking, Railway and Flight Reservations, Education and even defense of a country. There is hardly any sector of business which does not utilize Computers. Important and critical business tasks cannot be accomplished without the help of computers.

Just like human beings, computers are also prone to diseases which are created by attack of viruses. Proper back up of all data stored in computer must be maintained to provide back up in case of storage media failure. Computers must be secured from unauthorized use by passwords and must be protected from viruses by installing anti-virus programs in them. Computers, if safeguarded and used properly can create wonders for human kind and can produce results which are unachievable without them.

Spyware Is A Growing Problem To Computer Users

Spyware Is A Growing Problem To Computer Users by Helen Cox

Spyware can intercept and take partial control over a user's interaction with a computer, without the user's informed consent. The first recorded use of spyware was on October 16th 1995. However spyware at first was meant to be denoted hardware meant specifically for espionage purposes.

In 2000 Gregor Freud, who is the founder of Zone Labs used the term spyware in a press release for ZoneAlarm Personal firewall. It was since this press release that spyware has taken on its present sense.

Computer systems that are running Microsoft Windows have seen spyware be a preeminent threat since 2006. This is especially true if the computer system uses Internet Explorer as its main browser.

Computers with Internet Explorer as their main browsing site are particularly vulnerable because Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser and also because it has a tight integration with windows, which allows spyware to access crucial parts of an operating system.

Another potentially malicious piece of software is Adware. Although the intentional use of Adware is in a none harmful way, as it was made to simply display adverts, such as pop ups, it has the potential for misuse. Adware and spyware are similar to viruses in the sense that they can be malicious in nature; however people are profitting from these threats making them more popular.

Programmes such as Eudora Mail Client display adverts instead of using Shareware fees. This is a prime example of adware being used in the intended way; as advert supported software, used in this way adware is not classed as a bad thing.

The way in which spyware has been designed is so that it exploits infected computers for commercial gain. Spyware monitors the web browsing activity of Internet users and uses this to target products at the internet user that reflects there search engine use.

Spyware does what the name states, it spies on you, it takes note of your web browsing activities and then targets you based on its findings. Spyware isn't just about getting you to click on pop up adverts; it has the potential to start taking control of your computer by adding toolbars to your browser window as well as redirecting your homepage.

Although spyware doesn't spy on you in the sense of taking your identity, it has the potential to do this. Spyware can take things such as credit card numbers if you purchase items online. Spyware has the potential to be a very dangerous piece of software and one that everyone should be made aware of.

Spyware can also affect your disc usage, taking up space on it meaning you could run out of disc space for important documents as well as slowing your computer down.

There are many anti-spyware solutions around that could greatly help your computer. However there are also a lot of fake anti-spyware programmes around. One way in which these fake anti-spyware programmes target you is through banner ads on websites. These banner ads usually tell you that your computer is infected and that by clicking on the banner ads you can download the latest anti-spyware software. This may be true but this 'latest' software is actually fake software that won't get rid of spyware and will more than likely cause your computer to have more spyware.

In order to get rid of spyware in a safe way you should always get your anti-spyware software from a genuine website.

Put Recruiting Software to Work for You

Put Recruiting Software to Work for You by Caitlina Fuller

Are you interested in using recruiting software? Do you know anything about it? Generally, companies that are trying to use on demand staffing software have no clue how to manage their website in order to make it look attractive and like a place worth applying. Many times the staffing software websites do look good, they just do not offer any value and this is what is most important. Websites that just look good but have no substance will not go very far with visitors.

What should be focused on is not just a website that looks good, but also one that makes job searchers want to sign up because they believe your site will help them find a job. The same goes for clients offering jobs. They want to see a site that looks professional, yes, but also one that offers them all the options they need for uploading job information and that will help them find a candidate.

There are actually several websites out there that make it easy on the applicant to find available jobs but very few if any websites make it easy for the clients to find available and qualified candidates for their position(s). So, any company wanting to really break out of the mold and get more clients looking for applicants and more job placements will quit focusing entirely on the job searchers and place some emphasis on the companies looking for employees.

There are millions of people searching for jobs on a daily basis worldwide and all of this traffic means there are lots of good reasons to get a website that is professional, useful, and works for both job applicants and employers. And, one of the most important things for these job boards is to get high rankings in Google and other search engines. The point is that when someone goes to Google and searches for "construction jobs in California" that the website comes up. And, this is the same for all the different job categories and locations. So, the website needs to focus on a search engine optimization campaign that targets keywords like professions, states, and the major cities or regions within those states. Sure, it would take a lot of effort and time to get the first place result in Google forever job category and location nationwide, or even worldwide, but it is certainly worth a try because it could pay incredible dividends.

Repairing DLL Errors - The Basics

Repairing DLL Errors - The Basics by Jeff Wilson

Claire Holmes, 26, teaches preschool in Columbus, Georgia. She is also one of millions of regular PC users who have no idea what DLL files are all about. If that sounds a little rude, I apologize, but I believe that just as a driver should know all about the vehicle that he or she is driving, so a PC user should know the basics of his or her machine, and DLL files fall into that category. If you don't know what they are, how will you tackle DLL errors when they occur?

So what are DLL files? Well, DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library, and at first glance, these files seem to do nothing, really. That's what Claire thought, and when she wanted some extra space on her hard drive, she just deleted what she thought were useless files that were occupying much-needed space. In her words, what followed was a "nightmare". Not only did she begin getting error messages on a regular basis, but plenty of programs on her PC also began operating improperly. "Ultimately, things reached a stage where my entire Windows OS just stopped working," says Claire. "I learned later that this kind of situation is what is known as DLL Hell."

In most cases, Windows DLL errors will pop up when you have either modified or erased your DLL files. This is mainly because more than one application may be using the same set of DLL files, and when you delete one application and decide that the DLL files pertaining to that application need to go too, you jeopardize the proper functioning of the other application.

The best way out of this situation, says IT expert and blog caster Devon Fraser, is to regularly clean Windows Registry, using a tried and tested Registry cleaner. Before you ask, Windows Registry is an integral - though often ignored - part of your PC, because it is the vast internal database on which all the applications running on your PC, including Windows, store their data. So it is integral all right, but ignored because the majority of PC users aren't even aware of its existence.

Naturally, all DLL files are part of the Registry too, and when they are erased or modified or become corrupt in some way, these changes reflect in the Registry. Most deleted or modified files will leave traces in the Registry, which will affect the proper running of other programs, which is why I recommend that the best way to deal with DLL errors is to regularly - like, once a month - clean your Windows Registry.

Claire used a Registry cleaner, and the results were immediately evident. "It was like I had installed a new system," she says now. Most experts recommend that you clean Windows Registry after you install or uninstall a program, because improper installation or uninstalling can often corrupt DLL files, leading to DLL errors. So go ahead, get into Registry cleaning mode.

AVG Free Downloads: Don't Blindly Download Or You May Regret It

AVG Free Downloads: Don't Blindly Download Or You May Regret It by John Synder

There are factors to initially deem an AVG free download as being safe, and the top priority is if the web site itself can actually be verified or confirmed. If the web site is unknown it is best to find one that has more traffic and positive feedback offered as far as the download application is concerned.

Most verifiable web sites will offer user comments or forums where the satisfaction of the user can be posted. If you can see this, then in most cases the application should be all right to download. However, there are web sites that offer the same thing and don't use comments or profiles of the users that have downloaded it, and for good reason to their knowledge, the program is corrupted and they don't want others to know it. Then once it is installed on your computer then the web site and who created it has control or access to information from your computer.

These people unfortunately are smart. They have the ability to be discreet and lure those who are looking for something to protect their computer to actually load their computer with corrupt programs and they steal your information from you or this in turn causes your computer to not function in the right way.

Many users who have access to the Internet and the ability to download as well often fall victim to these web sites. This is why it's a good idea to try every means possible to make sure that the web site is on the up and up. The web site shouldn't be afraid to offer the information users want to see. If you don't see any I would advice that you leave the web site as soon as possible. Simply because some of the web sites can exploit security holes in your web browser and install attachments onto your computer just by you clicking the link that leads to their web site. So you know it's not a bad thing to be "just too cautious". In the users realm of things it just means bad news if you don't exercise an extreme amount of caution when it comes to unknown web sites.

More advanced AVG programs that are offered will cost you, so if you happen onto a web site that you see this and the free version is available you still have a sense of caution to think about in case the advertising for the free version is being offered by a web site that isn't consistent with other web sites that might offer the AVG free download.

Protect Your Notebook from Spyware and Viruses

Protect Your Notebook from Spyware and Viruses by Tim Childree

Notebook computers bring a tremendous convenience to personal computing. Just sit within range of a wireless hotspot and you can connect to your office or home network, access your email, and complete important projects for work. However, roaming from one unsecured wireless network to another can leave your computer vulnerable to malicious software attacks.

Spyware and Viruses

If you are connected to a wireless network without its own firewall, hackers can easily intercept the signals you send and receive across the airwaves. Malicious individuals can also install spyware and viruses on your computer.

Spyware refers to an application designed to track a computer user's internet activities, keep note of sites visited, and gather other information. The term, "spyware," can also refer to any non-viral malicious software, including software that takes over your internet connection, pops up unwanted advertisements, or even blocks your internet connection. A tracking program is technically labeled as spyware only if the computer user does not consent to the download or installation.

Spyware collects information and sends it back to the spyware controller. The owner of the spyware program usually sells gathered information to marketers. For instance, spyware can get a computer user's email information, using that information to bombard the user with advertisements and spam. Spyware is also known as "malware" (Malicious Software), as it can be used to aid identity theft and fraudulent activities (some spyware programs mine credit card information and other sensitive financial information). Keylogging programs, used to steal credit card information and passwords by monitoring everything a user types, fall under the umbrella of spyware/malware.

Viruses are another type of malicious software. A virus is a piece of code that attaches itself to a program, a file, or your boot sector. These malicious programs are called viruses because they work much like a viral infection - they spread to other files, programs, and even computers, and they are designed explicitly to damage your files and destroy your applications.

Protecting Your Notebook from Spyware and Viruses

Protecting your notebook computer from spyware and viruses protects you against fraud and protects your privacy, too.

The first thing that you need to do is install a secure web browser. Internet Explorer is particularly vulnerable to unauthorized scripts which could be run and installed on your computer without your knowledge. Instead of using Internet Explorer, you can try using Mozilla Firefox, one of the most secure web browsers around. Firefox will always inform you about any download or installation, inform you about suspect sites, and update your browser automatically to continually improve security.

Aside from using Firefox, it is important that any computer user install a personal firewall to block unauthorized access attempts. For Windows XP users, Comodo Personal Firewall is a free option (there is an Alpha version of Comodo Personal Firewall Version 3, which adds Vista support, but this would not be a stable option until they reach the final release). Even the best firewall can sometimes allow spyware through, however, so scan your computer with a free program like Spybot: Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware SE, two of the very best anti-spyware programs available. You should not neglect to install anti-virus software, too. If you have an anti-virus program you already use, stick with it, but the free home edition of Avast and the open-source (free) anti-virus product ClamWin are two excellent options. Be sure to keep your security software updated (most programs will automatically update themselves, but they will sometimes prompt you for your permission) to give yourself the very best protection against malicious software.

Windows Vista - Which Version Do You Need?

Windows Vista - Which Version Do You Need? by Tim Childree

After deciding to shift to a Windows Vista OS, you need to decide on which Windows Vista version you should pick. Before you consider shelling out $400 for a Windows Vista Ultimate license, you really should ask yourself exactly what features you need and want so you can decide whether the price is right.

Windows Vista Home Basic

This is the most rudimentary version of Vista available. It has the more secure IE 7, the firewall, the quick search functionality, and easier connectivity. When it comes to the features that distinguish Vista from previous versions of the Windows OS, though, Home Basic is somewhat lacking, though it does offer parental control.

Windows Vista Home Basic is a good choice only if you use your computer solely for web surfing and basic document processing, or if your computer is just barely powerful enough to run Windows Vista.

Windows Vista Home Premium

For an extra $40, you can get much more out of Windows Vista. Aside from including all the features of the Home Basic version, Home Premium offers all of the window-dressing that makes Vista look like Vista. You will have pre-packaged games and Aero interface capability. Aero gives your windows and icons a 3D appearance and smoother transitions, as well as allowing you to add transparency effects to window borders. Home Premium offers tablet PC functionality, document collaboration, and scheduled backups. Home Premium also offers the fully integrated Windows Media Center for all your home entertainment needs, plus a moviemaker which is HD format-capable.

Windows Vista Home Premium is designed for the user who uses the computer for PC and network gaming, since Premium supports DirectX 10, with its advanced graphics technologies incredible graphics rendering. Premium is also designed for watching High Definition movie, editing/making video clips, burning DVD copies, and interfacing with the Xbox 360, which Home Premium edition automatically detects to allow for Video, Audio, and Picture sharing.

Windows Vista Business

Windows Vista Business drops Parental controls, Media Center features, and pre-installed games for obvious reasons. Vista Business does have the rest of the Home Premium features plus support for business applications and business data security (fax, remote desktop connectivity, file encryption, and complete shadow incremental backup). This version of Windows Vista is, as the name implies, strictly for business purposes.

Windows Vista Enterprise

Windows Vista Enterprise adds Microsoft's BitLocker encryption technology to the feature set found in Windows Vista Business, but this version of Windows is only offered to businesses participating in Microsoft's Software Assurance program.

Windows Vista Ultimate

This edition has everything that is included in the Home Premium and Business editions. Vista Ultimate also adds Enterprise's BitLocker encryption technology for the computer's hard drives, protecting the drives so that only authorized users can boot up the OS or view the files contained in the drives.

Because of its full complement of features, Vista Ultimate is perfect for people who use the PC for fun and business in equal parts, as well as users who want to be protected from data loss and PC theft.

How To Attain High Search Engine Rankings Through Keyword Density

How To Attain High Search Engine Rankings Through Keyword Density by Max Whitson

Keyword density is a term that means the number of times a specific keyword appears on your site or web page. Keywords are very important to achieve high search engine rankings because they are the terms people will search for. When you target a specific keyword that keyword will come up whenever someone searches for it in the search engines. A common mistake is that some people overuse the power of keyword density. If you do this, your site will convey as spam or an artificial site.

Keyword density is always expressed as the percentage of the total word content divided by your particular keyword. Say you have one hundred words and out of those words your keyword shows up seven times. This means that you keyword density is seven percent, which is the highest percent to strive for. Remember that this applies to every page on your website. So you should put your keywords in all your website’s pages. It is also a good idea to have multiple keywords so you have more chances of getting people to your site. Ten keywords would probably be the highest that you should go since you will need to focus a considerable amount of attention to the keywords you have chosen.

There are many ways to check the keyword density of your websites. One way is to copy all your content and past it in word and check the total number of words and divide it by your keyword. You also can try some programs that calculate keyword density as well.

Keyword density is not the only thing you should do to achieve high search engine rankings, but it is an important step. Without keywords you would have very few visitors from search engines since you haven’t told the search engines what your site is about. Pick out a few keywords, write content with at least three percent of your keywords and then repeat the process over and over. Soon, you will find that your website will appear on the first page search engines for that particular keyword you targeted. Keywords are a great way to achieve high search engine rankings.

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo settle gambling claims

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo settle gambling claims

By Diane Bartz

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp, Google Inc and Yahoo Inc agreed to a settlement worth $31.5 million to resolve accusations that the companies promoted illegal Internet gambling, the Justice Department said on Wednesday.

The companies were accused of receiving money from online gambling businesses to advertise illegal betting from 1997 through 2007.

As part of the settlement, the companies will pay cash to the U.S. government and provide millions of dollars worth of public service advertisements informing young adults and teenagers that Internet gambling is illegal.

U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway in St. Louis, Missouri, who prosecuted online gambling company BETonSPORTS Plc earlier this year, announced the settlement.

"These sums add to the over $40 million in forfeitures and back taxes this office has already recovered in recent years from operators of these remote-control illegal gambling operations," Hanaway said in a statement.

Microsoft will pay $4.5 million to the U.S. government, $7.5 million to the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and provide $9 million worth of public service advertising.

David Bowermaster, a Microsoft spokesman, said that Microsoft stopped accepting ads from online gambling sites nearly four years ago. "This agreement reflects our ongoing commitment to online safety," he said.

Yahoo's settlement of $7.5 million includes forfeiting $3 million to the U.S. government and providing $4.5 million worth of online ads for a public service advertising campaign. Google will pay $3 million, the department said.

The United States made it illegal in October 2006 for credit card companies to accept charges for online gambling, effectively closing the market to foreign companies. Many are based in Europe, such as 888 Holdings, PartyGaming and Sportingbet Plc.

As part of a U.S. crackdown on Internet gambling, two founders of payments processor NETeller Plc were arrested in January. In May, BETonSPORTS pleaded guilty to U.S. racketeering charges and agreed to cooperate in a case against the company's founder and other co-defendants.

On Monday, the European Commission accepted a U.S. offer to open U.S. markets for courier services, storage and warehouses in exchange for Europe dropping its fight for compensation for closing the U.S. gambling market to foreign firms.

PartyGaming, bwin Interactive Entertainment and other European firms had hoped the European Commission would fight on. U.S. restrictions on online gaming wiped out billions of dollars of the European firms' market value.

Wireless Networks: How Do They Work?

Wireless Networks: How Do They Work?

Wireless networks use radio waves instead of wires to transmit data between computers. Here's how:

The Binary Code: 1s and 0s

It's well known that computers transmit information digitally, using binary code: ones and zeros. This translates well to radio waves, since those 1s and 0s can be represented by different kinds of beeps. These beeps are so fast that they're outside the hearing range of humans.

Morse Code: Dots And Dashes

It works like Morse code, which is a way to transmit the alphabet over radio waves using dots (short beeps) and dashes (long beeps). Morse code was used manually for years via telegraph to get information from 1 place to another very quickly. More importantly for this example, though, it is a binary system, just as a computer system is.

Wireless networking, then, can be thought of as a Morse code for computers. You plug in a combined radio receiver and transmitter, and the computer is able to send out its equivalent of dots and dashes (bits, in computer-speak) to get your data from here to there.

Wavelengths And Frequencies

You might wonder how the computer can send and receive data at high speed without becoming garbled nonsense. The key to wireless networking is how it gets around this problem.

First, wireless transmissions are sent at very high frequencies, which allows more data to be sent per second. Most wireless connections use a frequency of 2.4 gigahertz (2.4 billion cycles per second) -- a frequency similar to mobile phones and microwave ovens. However, this high frequency produces a wavelength that is very short, which is why wireless networking is effective only over short distances.

Wireless networks also use a technique called "frequency hopping." They use dozens of frequencies, and constantly switch among them. This makes wireless networks more immune to interference from other radio signals than if they transmitted on a single frequency.

Internet Access Points

The final step for a wireless network is to provide internet access for every computer on the network. This is done by a special piece of wireless equipment called an access point. An access point is more expensive than a wireless card for 1 computer, because it contains radios capable of communicating with around 100 computers, sharing internet access among them. Dedicated access points are necessary only for larger networks. With only a few computers, it is possible to use 1 of them as the access point, or to use a wireless router.

Industry Standards

Wireless equipment from different manufacturers can work together to handle these complex communications because there are standards which guide the production of all wireless devices. These standards are technically called the 802.11. Because of industry compliance with these standards, wireless networking is both easy to use and affordable today.

Wireless Is Simple To Use

If all this talk of frequencies has you worried -- relax. Wireless networking hardware and software handle all of this automatically, without need for user intervention. Wireless networking, for all its complicated ability, is far simpler to use than you might expect.

Why Do I Need Anti Virus Software For My Computer?

Why Do I Need Anti Virus Software For My Computer?

If youve recently purchased a computer, or are just learning about using email and the internet, you may have heard about computer viruses and anti-virus software. You may be wondering if this is something that you should be concerned about, and if so, what you should do about it. This article will attempt to answer these questions for you.

First, you may be wondering just what a computer virus is. Basically a computer virus is one of many types of small programs that install themselves on your computer without your consent. Usually they enter your program through an email, or while you are browsing a website.

When these programs run, usually without you knowing, they can cause all types of problems with your computer. Some viruses can be mildly annoying, slowing down your computer as they use your computers resources for another purpose. Others can be very dangerous, collecting your personal information and sending it to another party, or damaging your hard-drive.

True to their name, viruses are able to use your internet connection and email program and send themselves to the computers of other people you know, spreading themselves just like a contagious disease.

Because of this, just like the health of your body, when it comes to computer viruses, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is much easier to prevent viruses from entering your computer than it is to get rid of them and cure your computer once it becomes infected. This is why Anti-Virus software is important.

Once you realize that you need anti-virus software installed and running on your computer, youll have to choose which one to purchase and install. This can be a complicated process, but here are some tips to make it a bit easier.

First, check your computer to see if it came with anti-virus software. Many new computers are shipped with anti-virus programs already to go on them, you just need to turn them on. Check your instruction manual to see if this is the case with your computer.

Check with the vendor. If you purchased your computer from a local retailer, check with them to see what anti-virus program they recommend. They should be more than willing to help you and may even be able to provide you with a discount since you purchased a computer from them.

Once you have your anti-virus installed and running on your computer, be sure to contact the softwares support if you have any questions. It is also important to keep your software updated. Many of these programs will automatically update themselves when you are online. This is very important since new viruses are always appearing and you want to make sure your computer is protected.
